ESL in Montreal
Teaching ESL is an awesome way to travel around the world. Within countries where English is spoken as an official language it is not different either. Canada is officially a bilingual country; nevertheless, in a small area of this continental territory, English is spoken as a second, or more interesting yet, a foreign language. As an immigrant to Canada, I first thought that English and French were spoken evenly by all Canadians. I did not consider at that time the many aboriginal languages that are still in use in this very multicultural, multilingual and diverse country, eh? Now the question that has been driving my attention is, can an anglophone live in Montreal with little or nonexistent French? Should one? And most importantly, what can one do to function well both in English and in French without too much damage caused nor to the linguistic ecosystem, neither to the speaker of both languages as a additional languages?
